Welcome to the chameleonic catalogue of Jitwam.
The talented producer and multi-instrumentalist first came across my desk in 2019 when I stumbled upon the genre-bending album Honeycomb. I was enamored by his ability to swirl neo-soul, funk, rock and pop into either indie bangers tailor-made for a summer playlist; or moody tracks tailor-made for the bedroom.
As I kept digging through his catalogue over the years, I came to discover that he’s a talented DJ as well. Not like a wub wub, big drop rave DJ; more like the groovy house shit you’d hear at a chic vintage shop in Brooklyn.
No matter what style he’s employing on a given track, his lyrics are illustrated by impressive vocal performances. I’m not saying Sam Cooke’s estate is going to come knocking on his door to head up tribute shows… he’s not a classical crooner… but he masks that with distinctive vocal production that helps craft his sonic landscape. It kinda sounds like he’s singing through a megaphone at times. Nonetheless, he sings with the soul and confidence needed for his music to reach its full potential.
He is the co-founder of The Jazz Diaries, a label whose mission is to “shine a light on the artists blurring the lines between electronics and live instrumentation,” which makes sense if you listen to his music. My mission is simply to catch a Jitwam show this year. Live instrumentation or DJ set; I will be looking out for a run of shows in the states either way.
